Colonization
An example of colonization is when the Europeans settled in North America, the land of the indigenous peoples in the 1800s. Over the course of a century, they took over their land, used up their resources, and displaced their families by forcing indigenous children into residential schools. Their horrendous acts resulted in the loss of indigenous cultures, languages, and people. Moreover, today, there are lasting issues in indigenous communities, such as lack of sufficient resources, water, and safety.
Decolonization
In Canada, decolonization is often referred to as indigenization, which in simple terms is restoring the power to the Indigenous people. In this sense, decolonization includes recognizing and presenting Indigenous ways of living and learning as equal to that of Westerners. Examples of indigenization in education could include the inclusion of Indigenous readings and the adoption of Indigenous learning approaches in the classroom.
